This is the finished article. I didn't intend to make this particular item. I have been trying for close to three years to make a solid helix out of 2 different woods, and everytime I have tried it, before finishing I think I have succeeded this time, only to end up with another piece of firewood. This time I was so close, I thought I could cut the joints out and drill the centre out and it would be a 2 wood helix.
This shows the 2 woods near enough right.
This shows the centre having been drilled out and the actual helix being sawn to rough.
This shows before and after the rough drilling and sawing of the helix.
Here you can see six pieces of Mahogany and six pieces of Oak stave cut, glued up and rough turned.
This is the whole project before sanding, finishing and assembly.
At a later date I will show how to make the mould to melt the pewter tankard to make the candle cup itself.
Here you can see the helix where it didn't line up, but I know there is someone out there who will know exactly how to do this. So come on ladies and gentlemen, put your thinking caps on and help us all out.
